To kick-off this project, I met up with purveyor of Australian music, Stephen from Egg Records in Newtown. He has been working in the shop for over 10 years and prior to that he had his own business selling second hand records for 17 years. It’s fair to say that he knows his music.
Stephen, do you remember your first ever band T-shirt?
– Yes, it was a U2 one, and I still had it until recently. It had been living in a drawer for the past 20 years!
What makes a great band T-shirt?
– I like the old Patti Smith and Blondie style T-shirts. With organic imagery or graphics as opposed to square photos printed blindly straight over the chest.
Last experienced live gig?
– I just recently saw new Sydney outfit The Nature Strip upstairs at the Bank Hotel in Newtown (conveniently located around the corner from where I work at Egg Records).
What’s your favourite album ever?
– History of Rock ‘n’ Roll Volume One by Laughing Clowns.
If we’re gonna walk out of here with one tune in our headphones, what should it be?
– Jails by Tex, Don & Charlie.
If you need some help with sourcing some great Australian music, head down to Egg Records in Newtown and check in with Stephen or any of the other staff.
This project is a collaboration with iconic Australian fashion brand MARCS and ARIA (Australian Record Industry Association). MARCS has launched five limited edition band t-shirts, all designed to support the #UnitedByMusic campaign. Let’s support our home grown Aussie music!
