Mechelse bevrijding
Today is the 61 st anniversary of the Liberation of the city of Mechelen form the Germans. My grandmother is here ( she's in the black jacket ) to help commemorate it as she was a part of the Belgium resistance during the german occupation. The sad part of this photo is that still even up to about 10 years ago, this square would have been filled with people. But there all slowly dying off
After the service, they are all invited up to the mayors reception room in the town hall.
While that goes on ,I have a little snoop around at the artwork on all the walls
We were allowed to walk in through the council chambers, so I went back for another look.
As I'm sure you can't just walk in here just like that
It's a very old room, the town Mechelen in it's heyday (centuries ago) was known for its craftsmen with wood, so these chambers has got some very old and ornate wooden furniture
So this would be the view from the mayors chair, or would it be the chairman's chair, he's got his little hammer and bell in the draw in front of him and ....hang on a minute
A copy of week end knack magazine, hahaha, too funny. It's like the Belgium version of Time/Newsweek magazine.
Meanwhile back in the other room , the older folk are still chatting. Here Granny is sitting in front of this amazing big tapestry ( another thing the Mechelen crafstman were know for was their skill in tapestry ) It's hard to see in this photo, but it is a big depiction of the battle of Tunisia, with Emperor Karel
We leave through the courtyard past a statue of "De Moeder" = the mother.
And as we cross the square we walk past the famous Cafe Den Beer , named after my Dad ( or so we like to think in our family ) So I took granny there for dinner tonight. And we had a great meal. Can you see the Bear ?
