A lot of power lines near the port, one of the workmen driving past, wondering what I was taking photos off, told me they were all about to come down After driving up Horrocks pass and taking a dirt road ( look out detour ) we end up at Hancocks look out A little history, courtesy of Mrs Evelyn Riches, whose late husband was Mayor of Port Augusta for many years, telling us how she unintentionally named this tourist attraction
" As a school girl living in Port Augusta , I had a girlfriend whose parents, Mr. & Mrs Hancok owned a car, a rarity in those days. Mr William Andrew Hancock was an officer in the commonwealth railways. The Hancocks loved the Ranges and often went there picnicking, taking me with them. A favourite spot was reached by turning towards the seas near the valley bridge, and following an almost impassable track till we came to a spot where we could look out past the foot hills and the Gulf, right across to Iron Knob. Some time later, my husband, Lin Riches, came to Port Augusta, and when he acquired a second hand car, we started visiting the Ranges. One day I said " Let's try to find the Hancock's lookout" the only term I could think of to denote the spot. We found it, and Lin was so entranced with the view that subsequently he took hundreds of others along to enjoy it also. We always referred to it as " Hancock's Lookout " because, as far as we knew, it had no other name. "
